I support Ayrshire Hospice and am a regular customer at their many shops in Ayrshire, but after two extremely negative experiences at this particular shop I will never set foot through the door again.

First, I bought a china ornament as a gift for my wife. It wasn't cheap, but I knew she'd love it. I paid, got it home, took the price sticker off and found that the sticker had been used to hide a substantial chip. I returned to the shop with my receipt and was told that a refund could not be provided as I had "obviously damaged" the piece after it was purchased.

Given the unusual position of the sticker, folded around the rim, it was clear to me that it had been deliberately place to hide the damage. I returned to the shop within an hour of the purchase, but still they insisted I had caused the damage. I decided to let it go and check under the price stickers for damage before I purchased in the future.

Second, just before Christmas I found a necklace in the shop that I knew my wife would love. It was priced at the low end of what I would have expected, so I assumed the staff had missed the sterling silver mark. I pointed it out to the woman on the till and said I would pay twice the marked price.

A staff member/volunteer obviously overheard me, came marching from the back and took the necklace from me. She said she needed to check something and went into the back. When she returned, she told me she could not sell me the necklace at the marked price or at double the marked price as I had offered. Instead, she decided I would have to pay EIGHT TIMES the marked price.

I found this behaviour abhorrent. Had I said nothing, I could have walked out of the shop having paid the original marked price. I decided to be fair and was rewarded with a metaphorical slap in the face. Fortunately, I found a near identical necklace, in much better condition, on eBay for just £1 more than I had offered to pay.

The behaviour of the staff/volunteers in this shop is appalling. Worse, when I contacted Ayrshire Hospice to advise of their conduct, I was told the person responsible for the shops would get back to me by the end of the day. Two months on and no contact. I won't let their failure colour my opinion of the charity or their other shops, but the Cumnock shop will not get another penny out of me.

Disgusting.
