A quite unique airport. The runway is ,quite literally the beach, An Traigh mhòr -but isn't a "landing strip" it is s fully operational runway with all that that entails. The airport has a terminal, a cafe control tower, the works and operates scheduled air services to other airports in Scotland.

It was a good weather on the day we flight from Glasgow to Isle of Barra but it was raining on the way back.
Great and tasty food and friendly staff at the airport cafe, we fill up our lunch everyday during our 3 days holiday.

It was a good weather on the day we flight from Glasgow to Isle of Barra but it was raining on the way back.
Great and tasty food and friendly staff at the airport cafe, we fill up our lunch everyday during our 3 days holiday.

Amazing to watch the aircraft land on the beach depositing passengers and mail. If you ask in the terminal they will tell you the times to turn up to see landing and then take off (it will always be at low tide!). Sadly still no cafe, but what a sight to see a scheduled flight on one of the most fabulous locations for an airport anywhere.

I would like to leave 5* for the Staff at this airport who do such an amazing job at dealing with the complexities of this route. Dolina has been absolutely amazing looking after us when the planes were cancelled due to bad weather this week. She dealt with so many people at once, looking for accommodation and alternative connections and taxis etc. She even drove us to our hotel in her own car and sorted alternative tickets for us that evening after closing down the airport. We were so amazed at the care we received, so thank you! In terms of the airport facilities - it is wonderful that there is a lovely cafe with amazing food, free water filter/refill and accessible toilets.

What a location!

The airport itself is a little sad, with the tender for the Cafe closing in June I hope that there is a return of got food and drink service soon - but this remains the only airport in the world with a beach runway - three of them! A once in a lifetime experience.

Flew into the Barra Airport on Loganair from Glascow so we could land on the beach and explore for a few hours. Clean terminal, snack machines, plenty of room to sit and stay warm, and friendly staff. We walked about 5 during our stay to explore the beach on the western side over the dunes and north up the road to the end.
