One of my fav places to visit when looking for antique objects - there are some pieces of small furniture but mainly this place is like an Aladdin's cave for glass, porcelain, jewellry, vintage clothing and accessories, toys (including a large collection of toy cars), paper, postcards, watches, militaria, long plays and albums, and more.

This place is amazing. I know it'll have been described as Aladdin's cave before but truly there is something for everyone here. It's massive, be prepared to spend an hour or two looking around and you'll want to, just in case you find that treasure you've been looking for.

There's a tea room in the attic space if you need to consider a purchase.

Of interest to me is the railway book area upstairs, with all kinds of paper based railwayana, GWR goods bills, maps, diagrams etc

I went in with a rough idea of things to look out for and you know that feeling when you see it, you know it's got to be yours. I saw several things but this one spoke to me...a 1920s art deco clock 😍 It's now pride of place on my sideboard.

If you're in the area be sure to visit, there's parking spaces in the nearby Tesco where you can stay for a max 2hrs.

Stop in and see if you can find your treasure.

Went to the Hungerford Arcade this morning and noticed this display of Robinson’s Jam Gollywogs statues and pins for sale. Given the history of the Gollywog character and its extremely racist and offence nature, I felt it was completely inappropriate for this to be on display and sold.

I raised this issue one of the staff members, mainly to start a conversation and raise awareness. When discussing this with one of the managers I was bombarded by other members of staff who were defending the racist display. Many of the staff at the arcade were rude and aggressive towards me and made me feel extremely uncomfortable.

From speaking to the manager, it is clear that this display isn’t going to be taken down.

Given that the Gollywog character used in Robinson’s Jam advertisement (until 2001) was inspired by Black Face Minstrel shows in which white actors would wear blackface and draw on exaggerated features creating a cartoonish “black” character who would then be humiliated and degraded in a performance by portraying them as ugly, stupid, lazy, hyper-sexual and as criminals; I therefore feel this is a completely unacceptable display and item to be sold to make a profit out of in today’s society. As a community we should be aiming to promote equality and inclusion and not supporting racism or discrimination of any kind!

I love walking round this arcade regularly to see what new treasures there are and to check if my favourite Queen Elizabeth II ceramic coronation jug is still there! I will buy it one day, when I'm feeling frivolous.

Most recently, I discovered a section with a huge collection of old postcards. I ended up sitting for over an hour trawling through hundreds of them, some written on, fascinated by the messages - often written decades ago - and the history and poignancy behind them. One postcard was from a young man to his sweetheart and he had described his day in Portsmouth preparing bayonets, dated around 1916 as I recall which made it all the more significant and memorable.

Well worth a visit, with a quick pit stop at the tea room upstairs - but mind your head on the low beam when going up the stairs!

There are things for all kinds of budget. so far we bought some plates, cutlery, books and a mirror. You can spend the whole day here easily as it is huge, but don't worry, there is also a teashop upstairs
