Looks great however it was very difficult to get to. Upon walking to the boat you are greeted with a lot of yard work going on. i found it impossible to get to during work hours as there were people there. but it seems that many other people have got there. It may just take a little exploring to get too!

Looked like a nice area and would be great with a drone!

Light Vessel 72 is in an obscured spot on the banks of the River Neath; a location that can ordinarily only be viewed from approximately 1 mile away. Whilst the ship is sadly now largely forgotten and rotting away to ruin it has something of a famous past. Launched in 1903, Light Vessel 72 played a conspicuous role in the D-Day landings at Normandy on 18th June 1944. This Light Vessel was used to mark a section of mineswept channel on the approach to Juno Beach, thereby assisting in the safe landing of British and Canadian Troops.

The ship is now in a very poor state, listing onto its starboard side, and access from land seems very difficult, if not impossible now. I made the journey by kayak on a high tide, but the landward side seems largely to be fenced off preventing access.

It is a shame to see the ship reach such of a sorry end, but I was really pleased to have been able to visit it before it meets what must now be an inevitable demise in the coming years.

Light vessels 72 is an interesting boat, has lots of history. Apart from being one of the longest serving light vessels for Trinity house she was involved in the D day landings during the second World War. Such a shame to see her lying in the mud in a very sorry state. Perhaps one day someone will salvage her.
