Stopped here for provisions when just off the ferry from Oban, before bivvying out at Vatersay. They have a disabled- friendly loo at the back of the store with a sliding door. The staff were very cool about me changing in there. Excellent little supermarket, perfectly situated right next to the distillery!!

I have visited the co-op on Barra, and, for the size of the store, it is well stocked . . the staff are extremely friendly and helpful, the opening hours are a big plus to locals and tourists alike. Thank goodness the parasites Jane Eyre and Liam O'Hanlon are hopefully well away from here now and
will never return. This is my second visit to this lovely island, and hope to visit again.

It's best to ignore the reviews from a few years ago as this Co-op has recently been extended and seen some big changes made I have deleted my old review to make my new one.

The new Co-op is bigger than before thanks to the new extension which has allowed the inside of the shop to have a big layout change which I think is much better than before its more roomy inside with aisles being longer and slightly wider. Because of the more shelf space it has allowed the shop to bring in a bigger variety of food and other products that were never sold at the old Co-op. There are more checkouts now along with four self service checkouts the checkout area is also much bigger than before allowing more room for people to queue. Inside has been given a makeover it's got a nice new modern feel throughout the whole shop.

However there are some drawbacks the carpark isn't any bigger than the old one and during the height of summer there still isn't enough room I've seen people parking else where and it doesn't help when some selfish tourists park their motorhomes in the carpark and spend hours there while not even shopping. While the food choice has improved espcially with chilled and frozen food some other area's are still lacking in choice and have just the same selection as before but just more of it. As for the self service checkouts 90% of people using them don't know how to this causes a big wait because there should be a member of staff always there to help and watch but there isn't I think they should have just put another 2 big checkouts there and forgotten about the self service checkouts all together.

Overall the new Co-op is a big improvement and much better than before however there are some drawbacks holding it back from me giving it 5/5.

We recently visited the lovely island of Barra, and were delighted with the service and helpfulness of ALL the staff in the Co-op. Because we flew in and didn't have a car, I rang to ask if they would deliver groceries - they don't officially deliver but were intending to get our goods to our cottage some 8 miles distant via a member of staff who was going in that direction until another kind person stepped in and picked up for us. The shop is adequately stocked, in fact far better than I would have expected for a small island in the Outer Hebrides. Together with the local produce around the island and stocked by the Community shop, you couldn't ask for more.
The reviews posted by Liam O'Hanlon and Jane Eyre 2 YEARS AGO should be removed as they are obviously pure fiction (clue in J Eyre's name?) nasty, offensive and downright libellous - a mole from Asda maybe? (and nobody is fat!!)
If you want big well stocked shops, I would suggest you don't live on or visit the Isle of Barra or any other remote isle for that matter.
I do think that a delivery service would benefit all concerned: visitors, locals and the Co-op itself of course.
So, well done to Paul and his team, and thanks to all of you.

Dependable, predictable but boring. Maybe but I like the Co-op because I know what I will have available. I can buy fresh food for a week, and different fresh food the following week, but then it's back to week 1. I don't have a good fridge or freezer on my boat..
