“I am the State” event promotes environmental protection

During the debate festival “I am the State”, organised by Mazeikiai District Municipality and the Telšiai region waste management centre, participants were invited to learn how to sort waste correctly, participate in a sustainable basketball tournament, quizzes and reduce the use of disposable dishes at mass events.

Food was made by scouts of the Samogitian Scout Organization and served in reusable containers, so that festival participants could contribute to a friendlier and cleaner environment while becoming familiar with the concept of bringing reusable containers to mass events, for example cups or drinking glasses. Participants who brough their own cups were offered free coffee.

A representative from the Telšiai region waste management centre gave a lecture on correct waste sorting. Although there is enough information about sorting, there is still a lack of proper sorting skills among the population.

Participants were invited to a sustainable basketball tournament. The combination of basketball and waste sorting attracted an impressive number of participants of all ages. The fun game not only drew attention to the importance of waste sorting, but also provided a lot of positive feedback. Three winners were determined in the final where the first-place winner was awarded with an original basketball fan t-shirt, and other finalists – souvenirs.

The Circular Based Waste Management project is funded by Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway through the EEA and Norway Grants Fund for Regional Cooperation – eeagrants.org
